File Server Configuration
April 2002
Note:  Server Configuration change very quickly.  Any server that exceeds these capabilities will function.

These server configurations are representative of servers sized for the stated load.  This is based upon typical usage by actual students running typical applications in real schools.  These configurations are proper for Microsoft NT or Novell Netware networks.  TLC School Connect puts a minimal load on the server compared to the load created by students downloading instructional network.  Use these configurations to determine if your server is powerful enough to service the users loads you expect.

Key Configuration Components:

  1. Disk Configuration - Number of Disks, RPM speed, RAID, and Total Disk Space.
Upgrade to RAID with 4 disks if you expect to deliver full motion video to more than 15 workstations simultaneously.
  2. CPU - Number of CPUs and their speed in MHz.
Two processors are needed for servers with more than 250 workstations.
  3. Memory - Amount of total memory and memory speed.
  4. LAN - 100 MHz or Gigabit Ethernet.
Do not skimp on the servers network adapter.
  5. Bus -  Width and speed.

How big a network do you have?

Notes:

Memory Note:

The old formula for Novell memory requirements that we have used for so long (8 MB memory for each GB of disk) is no longer valid.

With Netware 5.x, there is a new memory management process in Netware and as a result, a new formula.  Basically, Netware memory requirements are just based on a 128MB base with more memory added for all the services running on the F/S. Memory requirements scale with the number of simultaneous users rather than the amount of disk space as it did in the past.

All configurations, except the 10 user configuration, provide one empty memory slot for future memory upgrades.

RAID Note:

Note that for large servers with more than 2 disk drives, RAID is recommended for enhanced performance and reduced risk of disk failure. RAID uses 1 drive to hold redundant information so the effective disk available to Novell/NT for customer applications is 1 drive less than the total number of drives installed.

Tape Backup Note:
Note that there is no backup software bundled with the tape drive, hence the additional part number for Backup Software.  Please use the correct part number that corresponds to the Network Operating System that the customer is using.  Additional Backup Software Options :
K12NS171    Novanet Open File Manager
K12DR081    Novanet 8 Disaster Recovery for Netware
K12DR091    Novanet 8 Disaster Recovery for NT/2000
