Math and More
Math and More programs recognize that children come to school with a great
deal of knowledge about the world around them and significant experience in
recognizing shapes, patterns and movement, gathering and comparing information,
and following directions.
The Math and More mathematics curriculum builds upon
this knowledge with learning activities that connect mathematical ideas to
students own interests, neighborhoods, family and cultural backgrounds. The
curriculum also builds upon leading-edge research, supporting the content areas
identified by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) as needing
increased attention in primary grades:
 | Patterns and relationships |
 | Geometry |
 | Probability and statistics |
 | Concepts, processes, problem solving, and higher order thinking skills |
 | Combines need for physical manipulatives with computer-based
environments |
 | On-line and off-line teacher materials and lesson plans |
 | On-line and off-line student materials and activities |
 | Video component |
 | Speech support in Math and More for Grades 1 & 2 |
 | 12 - 18 weeks of math curriculum |
 | Supports Teaching and Learning with Computers (TLC) |
 | Constructivist learning environment |
 | Exploration, discovery, and cross-curricular integration |
 | Developmentally appropriate real world mathematical connections |
Educational Goals
 | Students learn to value mathematics. |
 | Students learn to communicate mathematically. |
 | Students learn to reason mathematically. |
 | Students become confident in their ability to do mathematics. |
 | Problem solving used as a primary means of learning mathematics. |
 | Students see ways in which mathematics is used in the real world. |
 | Provides suggestions and guidance on ongoing assessment techniques. |
Standards
 | School completion |
 | Student academic achievement |
 | Leadership in math and science |
 | Parental participation |
 | National Council of Teachers of Mathematics |
 | Covers the major content areas identified as needing increased
attention in the primary grades: geometry, patterns and relationships,
and probability, statistics, and data collection. |
 | Meets the standard on communication, as students regularly relate
everyday language to mathematical language in whole-class discussions
and small groups. |
 | The themes and activities chosen for the units meet the standard on
mathematical connections by providing connections to students' prior
interests, their neighborhoods, and their family and cultural
backgrounds. |
Developer's Corner
Math and More was developed by IBM Canada and Education Development Center (EDC)
in response to the recommendations of the National Council of Teachers of
Mathematics Standards. EDC is a publicly supported nonprofit organization
dedicated to promoting human development through education.
Classroom Environment
Math and More is based on the vision of children as active learners, working
on meaningful problems, collaborating with others, reflecting on their own
progress, and using a variety of resources, including computer-based tools and
video. Math and More in a Teaching and Learning with Computers (TLC) classroom
environment provides for whole group and small group activities.
Math and More was designed to be used in a Teaching and Learning with
Computers environment
where the on-line software activities and off-line learning center activities complement one another and
reinforce the concepts being taught. The software is supported by their
respective Teacher Guides.
The
Teacher’s Guides provide support through lesson plans as well as reproducible
masters. The Teacher’s Guide also includes integration ideas to
integrate mathematics across the curriculum as well as ideas for classroom
management, assessment, and home/school connections.
Math and More is an integrated primary math curriculum and embodies the
vision articulated by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. This
training is typically a two day training for each Math and More product. Participants
will be able to:
 | Understand the computer activities and the written components of
Math
and More and how they work together. |
 | Use the Math and More electronic file system. |
 | Describe how Math and More supports the NCTM standards relating to
children as active learners, using activities that stress problem
solving and problem posing, collaboration and communication, reasoning
and explaining and mathematical connections.
