Overview of TLC Math

TLC Mathematics is a spiral math curriculum based upon NCTM standards.  It was developed by John Schiener in IBM development labs.

TLC Mathematics is a series of three instructional software products that let teachers and students discover mathematical concepts together. Each product contains a collection of software activities and curriculum materials created for the respective grade levels. The software activities for TLC Mathematics were drawn from Exploring Measurement, Time and Money, Exploring Mathematics with Manipulatives, Exploring Math Concepts and SchoolVista Mathematics.

TLC Mathematics has a management component that allows a teacher to assign a single lesson, a variety of lessons or the whole program to their class.

Classroom Environment

TLC Mathematics was designed to be used in a Teaching and Learning with Computers environment where the on-line software activities and off-line learning center activities complement one another and reinforce the concepts being taught. The software is supported by their respective Teacher Guides.

The Teacher’s Guides provide support through lesson plans as well as reproducible masters. The Teacher’s Guide also includes integration ideas to integrate mathematics across the curriculum as well as ideas for classroom management, assessment, and home/school connections.

Professional Development

TLC Math combines the mathematical content from Measurement, Time and Money, Exploring Math Concepts and Exploring Math with Manipulatives and organizes them into mathematical strands.  Upon completion of the TLC Math training, participants will be able to:

bulletUnderstand the concepts and practices of the TLC Math software and how the curriculum strands are organized  bulletUnderstand the teacher and student steps necessary to begin using the software bulletUnderstand the layout of the Teacher's Guide and the materials provided for integration bulletUnderstand how the TLC Concept supports the software and activities provided in the Teacher's Guide

The TLC Math training is typically a one to two day training for each grade TLC Math product.

Every teacher will require instruction in how to use these programs and how to integrate it into their The TLC Mathematics training will support teachers in the use of the content and process skills called for in the National Council for Teachers of Mathematics standards. This training will enable teachers to create and use instructional plans for use as the basis for classroom instruction in core mathematical concepts.
